Open-Field Regenerative Agriculture and Plantation Crops

Alongside its controlled-environment farming operations, Abiola Lande Farms Nigeria Ltd will develop extensive open-field agricultural production based on regenerative farming principles designed to improve soil fertility, enhance biodiversity, increase long-term productivity, and strengthen environmental sustainability.

The open-field farming programme will focus on a combination of high-demand staple crops, plantation crops, animal feed crops, and value-added agricultural commodities, including:

  • Oil Palm

  • Cassava

  • Plantain

  • Moringa

  • Maize

  • Soybeans

  • Groundnuts

  • Yam

  • Sweet Potato

  • Vegetables and field crops suitable to local climatic conditions

  • Fodder and forage crops to support livestock operations

The integration of these crops within the wider farming estate creates a highly efficient circular agricultural system. Crop residues, cassava peelings, maize stalks, plantain waste, and other organic by-products can be utilised as livestock feed, compost inputs, or biomass resources, reducing waste while lowering production costs. In turn, manure generated from cattle, goats, poultry, rabbits, and other livestock enterprises is processed and returned to the land as a natural fertiliser, enriching soils and reducing dependency on imported chemical fertilisers.

The farm will adopt a range of regenerative agricultural practices, including:

  • Strategic crop rotation programmes to maintain soil fertility and reduce pest pressures.

  • Cover cropping to minimise erosion and improve soil structure.

  • Organic matter restoration through composting and manure application.

  • Water-efficient irrigation systems designed to maximise productivity while conserving resources.

  • Biological soil enhancement techniques to support beneficial microbial activity.

  • Agroforestry and palm-based production systems that encourage biodiversity and long-term land stewardship.

Particular emphasis will be placed on Oil Palm, Cassava, Plantain, and Moringa, which are well suited to Nigeria's climate and offer strong domestic, industrial, and export market opportunities.

Oil Palm provides multiple revenue streams through palm oil, palm kernel oil, animal feed by-products, biomass fuel, and future processing opportunities.

Cassava serves as a strategic food-security crop and can be processed into garri, high-quality cassava flour, starch, ethanol, animal feed ingredients, and industrial products, creating significant value-addition opportunities.

Plantain supports both fresh-market sales and value-added processing into plantain flour, chips, and packaged food products, while also providing organic biomass that can be returned to the soil or utilised within livestock systems.

Moringa offers exceptional nutritional, pharmaceutical, animal feed, and export potential due to its highly valued leaves, seeds, oils, and nutritional supplements.

By integrating crop production, livestock enterprises, aquaculture, hydroponics, processing, and renewable resource management, Abiola Lande Farms will create a resilient agricultural ecosystem where one enterprise supports another. This approach maximises land productivity, reduces waste, improves soil health, strengthens food security, diversifies income streams, and establishes a sustainable model for large-scale agricultural development capable of serving local, national, and international markets.

The farm will incorporate state-of-the-art controlled-environment hydroponic growing systems, enabling the year-round production of high-quality vegetables without reliance on traditional soil cultivation. Hydroponics is an advanced agricultural method in which crops are grown using carefully managed nutrient-enriched water solutions, allowing plants to receive optimum levels of water, nutrients, oxygen, and light throughout their growth cycle.

This approach delivers significantly higher yields per hectare than conventional farming, while using up to 90% less water, reducing pest and disease pressures, and enabling consistent production regardless of seasonal weather conditions. Through precise monitoring and management of nutrients, temperature, humidity, and irrigation, the farm can achieve superior crop quality, faster growth rates, and enhanced production efficiency.

The hydroponic operation will focus on a diverse crop rotation programme to maintain system productivity, support market demand, and ensure a continuous harvest throughout the year. Crops will include:
Tomatoes
Sweet peppers and chilli peppers
Cucumbers
Lettuce varieties
Kale
Spinach
Swiss chard
Cabbage seedlings
Spring onions
Celery
Pak choi
Coriander
Parsley
Basil
Mint
Other culinary and medicinal herbs
Microgreens and speciality leafy vegetables
Crop rotation and production scheduling will be carefully managed to maintain optimal nutrient balance, maximise system utilisation, and provide a consistent supply of fresh produce to wholesale, retail, hospitality, institutional, and export markets.

Where appropriate, the hydroponic facilities will be integrated with the farm's aquaponics operation, allowing nutrient-rich water derived from fish production to supplement plant growth. This further enhances sustainability by recycling valuable nutrients, reducing fertiliser consumption, minimising waste discharge, and creating a highly efficient circular food production system.

By combining advanced hydroponics with aquaponics and conventional agriculture, Abiola Lande Farms Nigeria Ltd will establish a resilient, high-yield production model capable of delivering premium-quality vegetables throughout the year while optimising land use, conserving water resources, and strengthening long-term food security and profitability.

Commercial fish production will be centred on African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus), supported by the cultivation of Tilapia to create a diversified and resilient aquaculture operation. African Catfish are recognised for their rapid growth rates, high stocking densities, strong market demand, and excellent feed conversion efficiency, making them one of the most commercially attractive fish species for large-scale production across Africa.

To maximise resource efficiency and environmental sustainability, the farm will incorporate a selective aquaponics integration system. Nutrient-rich water generated from the fish production units will be diverted into hydroponic crop-growing systems, where dissolved nutrients are utilised by plants as a natural fertiliser source. This process significantly reduces water consumption, minimises waste discharge, lowers fertiliser costs, and creates an additional revenue stream through the production of high-value vegetables, herbs, microgreens, and speciality crops.

The integration of aquaponics provides several strategic advantages:

  • Reduces water usage through continuous recycling.

  • Converts fish waste into a valuable plant nutrient resource.

  • Improves environmental sustainability and ESG performance.

  • Creates dual-income streams from both fish and crop production.

  • Reduces operational costs associated with water treatment and fertiliser purchases.

  • Supports year-round crop production under controlled conditions.

  • Enhances eligibility for green finance, sustainability grants, and carbon-reduction initiatives.

Upon harvest, fish will be transferred to the farm's dedicated processing and slaughterhouse facility, where they will be graded, processed, prepared, and packaged in accordance with food safety and export standards.

Following primary processing, products will be dispatched to a separate value-addition facility. A proportion of the production will be supplied fresh to wholesale, retail, hospitality, and export markets, while a designated percentage will undergo smoking and further processing to serve a distinct and highly profitable market segment. Smoked African Catfish remains a staple product across many African communities and international diaspora markets, benefiting from extended shelf life, enhanced flavour, and premium retail pricing.

This integrated production model enables the farm to capture value across the entire supply chain, from fish farming and aquaponic crop cultivation through to processing, smoking, packaging, and distribution. The result is a sustainable, commercially robust agribusiness capable of maximising profitability while minimising environmental impact and resource waste.

The farm will operate an integrated livestock enterprise comprising cattle, goats, poultry, and rabbits, strategically linked with crop production systems to create a sustainable circular economy. Manure and organic by-products generated from livestock operations will be utilised to improve soil fertility, reduce external fertiliser requirements, and enhance crop productivity, thereby closing nutrient loops, minimising waste, and strengthening the long-term resilience of the farming operation.

To maximise value retention across the supply chain, Abiola Lande Farms Nigeria Ltd will establish an on-site slaughterhouse and livestock processing facility. The facility will serve not only the farm's own livestock production but will also provide essential processing, handling, storage, and dispatch services for neighbouring farms, livestock producers, wholesalers, retailers, and commercial agricultural businesses.

The inclusion of a slaughterhouse within the estate delivers several important strategic and commercial benefits:

  • Greater control over product quality, traceability, and food safety standards.

  • Reduced transportation costs and livestock stress associated with long-distance movement prior to processing.

  • Increased profit margins through value-added processing rather than the sale of live animals.

  • Creation of additional revenue streams through processing services provided to third-party livestock producers.

  • Improved supply chain efficiency and year-round market access.

  • Enhanced opportunities for wholesale, retail, hospitality, institutional, and export markets.

  • Job creation and support for regional agricultural development.

Following processing, products will be graded, chilled, packaged, and dispatched through dedicated distribution channels. A proportion of production will undergo further value-added processing, including smoking, curing, and specialised packaging, enabling the business to access premium market sectors and higher-margin consumer segments.

By integrating livestock production, crop cultivation, processing, and distribution within a single estate, Abiola Lande Farms creates a highly efficient agribusiness model that maximises productivity, reduces waste, increases profitability, and provides critical infrastructure support to the wider agricultural community. This approach strengthens food security, encourages local economic development, and establishes the farm as a regional agricultural processing and distribution hub
